Malta is a feast for the eyes!
It’s hard to go wrong in the Mediterranean; from recently trendy spots like Sicily to classics like Greece and the Amalfi Coast, there are heavenly travel spots scattered all around the Med. One destination you might not have considered (but definitely should) is Malta. A tiny island just below (and a short ferry ride away from) Sicily, Malta is a feast for the eyes, from prehistoric ruins to its classy European capital.

Ancient aesthetics aren’t hard to find on this small island— start with the golden ruins of Ħaġar Qim, or meander through the picturesque walled cities of Mdina and Rabat. These two towns appear almost frozen in time as you wander through their silent streets or enjoy a coffee on a tranquil corner. And your jaunt through ancient Malta won’t be complete without a stop in Marsaxlokk, where Sunday’s fish market runs down the length of the harbor, with brightly painted fishing boats as its Instagram-worthy backdrop!

Ready for more modern vibes? Valletta is at once classic and modern; its new city gate gives way to old streets, almost untouched except for marks of World War II’s presence on the island. Seafood lovers cannot miss a meal at Palazzo Preca (make reservations in advance), where two sisters from Malta serve mouthwatering dishes like the seafood spaghetti or traditional Maltese shellfish soup.

Of course, we can’t pass over Malta’s natural beauty—there’s a reason its Europe’s best kept secret beach destination. With plenty of gorgeous bays, hikes with views for days, and pristine beaches, nature-lovers will feel right at home here. Gozo, the northern island, is home to Ramla Beach, a golden sand paradise with crystal clear water. And on the main island, Ghajn Tuffieha is perfect for laying around or climbing for a view of the bay.

Of course, there’s much more to explore in Malta than what we’ve listed here— the beauty of this little island is in what you find yourself! Vjaġġ tajjeb!
